Highways Boards

Records of the Highways Boards.

Highways Boards were created by the Highways Acts of 1835

and 1862, the first of which permitted the unification of

parishes into districts, for the purpose of maintaining

highways, and the second of which empowered the Justices of

the Peace compulsorily to unite parishes into districts.

The Highways Boards were abolished in 1894 and their

responsibilities transferred to the District Councils.

In the following lists the Boards have been designated as

follows:

Records of the Aberaeron District Highways Board.

Items 1 and 4-5 were deposited in the Cardiganshire Record

Office with the records of Aberaeron RDC, by the Chief

Executive of Ceredigion District Council, 6-8 August 1975,

and were formerly listed as SHB/1; items 2-3 and 7-30 were

transferred from the National Library of Wales, 5 July 1983,

and item 6 from the same, 8 January 1986.
