Business Records - Cardigan Engineering Co.

ACC. 470

Ref: DB/6

Records of J. P. Baillie and the Cardigan

Engineering Company, deposited per Miss

M. Patch, County Archivist.

October, 1984

Mr. J. P. Baillie was civil engineer for

the Cardigan Engineering Company which

supplied engines and boilers to the firms

of the district.

The records had not been preserved in

any order and have been sorted as follows:

Cardigan Engineering Company

The Company thrived at the beginning of

this century and a number of its records

have survived, mainly correspondence 1892

1931, business receipts and advertise-

ments . Much of the material is connected

with Messrs. Ruston, Proctor and Company

Limited of Lincoln because the Cardigan

Engineering Company acted as their

representatives in this area.

Civil Engineering

In his capacity as Company Engineer, Mr.

J. P. Baillie was a member of the Institution

of Civil Engineers. He kept copies of

its reports and Presidential addresses

and took a keen interest in its affairs.

Household

These records consist mainly of correspondence

to clothing firms [Pettigrew and Stephens

Ltd. Glasgow], about arrangements for

travel to Penang and from Mr. Baillie

to his daughter Joe. In addition 2 volumes

of Mr. Baillie's diary have survived [1931

and 1938], which are a record of his daily

routine and work.

Personal Interests

In his private life, Mr. Baillie had several

hobbies which he keenly pursued. He was

interested in farming, especially rearing

poultry and later on he devoted most of

his time to this. In keeping with his

engineering background, he was also very

interested in cars and motorcycles. He

received copies of The Motor and Motorcycling

every week and from these, he would either

keep articles of interest or the complete

edition.

Miscellaneous

This includes bus and train timetables,

membership of the Cardigan Boating Club

and some pamphlets.
